Raising livestock is one of the main sources of income and livelihood for many people living in rural or farm areas. Most people get their food from the animals that they are tending. But because of certain diseases, many of these animals are dying. Here are some of the most common diseases that cows, cattle, and sheep may acquire.Blackleg is very fatal young cattle disease. This disease is caused by bacteria called Clostridium chauvoei. These bacteria may enter your cattle through ingestion and is able to penetrate into the body through small holes in the digestive tract. The disease cannot be acquired from infected cattle to a healthy one just by mere contact. Some of the early symptoms of infection of this disease are loss of appetite, fever, depression, lameness, and quick breath rate. Swellings may also occur in the hip, chest, back, neck and all around the body. Death for the animal may occur from 12 to 24 hours upon infection. Vaccines are already available against this deadly disease.Bangs Disease aka brucellosis of cattle or contagious abortion is a disease caused by a bacterium called Brucella abortus. An animal infected with this disease will suffer from premature calving, usually on the 5th or 8th month of pregnancy. Milk coming from an infected cow may contain the bacteria and may present harm to humans, because this is the bacteria that causes undulant fever in humans.Caseous Lymphadenitis is a highly contagious infection in goats and sheep. The bacterium is able to enter the animal through open wounds, punctures, shearing, and oral ingestion of pus from abscess that has ruptured.Mad Cow Disease is caused when abnormal proteins occur in the cow’s brain, spinal column, small intestine, and even in their blood. They can also be found in lymph nodes, and bone marrow. It is believed that this disease is able to enter a cow when that cow is able to eat a product which is made from other animals that have the mad cow disease. Humans are also vulnerable to this disease. Humans may acquire this disease by eating a meat or drinking the milk of the infected animal. Some of the early symptoms that cow displays if they are infected with mad cow are: difficulty in standing and walking, poor muscle coordination, changes in behavior and attitude, sudden weight loss, and lesser milk production.Knowing the symptoms of some of the animal diseases will greatly help you prevent an outspread of that disease.
